| 1 | What do you think about learning vocabulary?
- Let's start by comparing our ideas about some general concepts in learning vocabulary.
- Select whether you agree or disagree with the following eight statements taken from Folse, K. (2004). Vocabulary Myths: Applying Second Language
Research to Classroom Teaching. Ann Arbor: The University of Michigan Press.

| 2 | How many words and how to use them

 How many words...
-
In terms of communicative competence, what role do vocabulary and grammar play? See what Henry Widdowson has to say on the subject by reconstructing fragments taken from an extract from his article.

Concordances and concordancing
- Once you have a good idea about the vocabulary profile of your corpus, you are in a good position to take advantage of other corpus-based tools like a concordancer and phrase extractor.
What is a concordance?
Making your own concordance of a text
Looking for recurring phrases

| 5 | The 'real' world of English
There are many PC-based programs you can use to create, interrogate
and print or save concordances of your own collection of texts.
- There is also a range of freely available web-based tools you can use.
- In this part of the workshop we'll look at some online concordances of published corpora, in particular the British National Corpus and the Collins Cobuild Bank of English.

Good luck!
